Walk-In Cooler Shipping and Commercial Refrigeration: How to Avoid Compressor Damage

Refrigeration is the most expensive and the most fragile equipment in any commercial kitchen — and the easiest to ruin in transit. A reach-in that tips too far, a compressor that never settled, or refrigerant that leaked on the road can turn a bargain purchase into a costly repair. These are the practices that keep commercial refrigeration arriving in working condition.

Keep units upright and let the oil settle

Compressors rely on oil that pools at the bottom of the unit. When a refrigerator is laid on its side or tilted too far during a move, that oil migrates into the refrigerant lines. Always ship refrigeration upright, and once it reaches its destination, let it stand powered-off for at least the same number of hours it spent in transit before switching it on. Powering up too early is the single most common cause of compressor failure after shipping.

Secure doors, shelves, and loose components

Glass doors, wire shelving, and drawer assemblies rattle loose over the road. Remove or immobilize shelving, tape doors closed with a non-residue strap rather than adhesive on the finish, and pad every corner. Glass-door merchandisers should be crated, not just blanket-wrapped, because a single road vibration can crack a sealed door panel.

Walk-in cooler shipping: panels, doors, and condensing units

Walk-in cooler shipping is different from moving a reach-in, because a walk-in is a kit of parts. Panels ship flat with edge protection, door assemblies are crated or padded, and the condensing unit and evaporator travel upright as refrigeration equipment. Label every panel so the box goes back together without gaps. A dented panel edge will not seal, and a walk-in that will not seal never holds temperature. See our walk-in cooler and freezer shipping page for the full process.

Use air-ride freight for sensitive units

Standard freight transmits every bump straight to the compressor mounts. Air-ride trailers isolate that shock and are worth the modest premium for reach-ins, walk-in condensing units, and any refrigeration you plan to keep for years. Combined with proper strapping, it dramatically lowers the risk of hidden internal damage.

Inspect on arrival before you sign

Document the unit with photos before pickup and again at delivery. Check for dented panels, cracked gaskets, and bent coils, and listen for abnormal compressor noise once the settling period is over. Catching damage at delivery — before you sign off — is what makes a freight claim straightforward instead of a dispute.
