LTL Freight vs. White-Glove Delivery for Restaurant Equipment: Which Service Do You Actually Need?

September 19, 2026

Comparison of standard LTL freight versus a white-glove delivery crew carrying commercial kitchen equipment into a restaurant

When you ship restaurant equipment, one of the first decisions you make also has the biggest impact on cost and risk: standard LTL (less-than-truckload) freight or full white-glove delivery. They are not interchangeable. Picking the wrong one can mean either overpaying for a simple move or watching a fragile combi oven get dropped at the curb. Here is how to decide.

What LTL freight actually includes

LTL freight shares trailer space with other shipments, which makes it the most affordable way to move palletized equipment. But the service ends at the dock: the carrier delivers to a loading dock or curb, and you are responsible for a forklift or crew, uncrating, and getting the equipment inside and into position. It assumes your equipment is crated and that you have the manpower and dock access on the receiving end.

What white-glove delivery adds

White-glove delivery handles everything past the dock: liftgate unloading, inside delivery, uncrating, debris removal, and setting each piece exactly where your kitchen plan calls for it. Equipment is typically blanket-wrapped and moved on dedicated or air-ride freight with far less handling between origin and destination — which is what protects sensitive units like refrigeration and glass-door merchandisers.

Cost vs. risk: how to weigh it

LTL wins on price for durable, palletized items when you have a dock and a crew. White-glove costs more up front but eliminates the hidden costs of LTL: rental forklifts, extra labor, damage from repeated handling, and downtime while you scramble to get equipment inside. For a single fragile unit or a full kitchen with no dock, white-glove is almost always cheaper once you count the true landed cost.

A simple rule of thumb

Choose LTL for rugged, low-value items when you have dock access and staff to receive them. Choose white-glove for refrigeration, cooking lines, anything fragile or high-value, and any delivery to a live restaurant without a loading dock. When in doubt, price both — a good logistics partner will quote each so you can compare.
